AVIEMORE HYDRO
Start Next Year “The Press** Special Service OAMARU, March 27. Construction of permanent works at Aviemore, the site for the new 200.000 k.w. hydro-electric power station on the Waitaki river, downstream from Benmore hydro, will probably start next year, according to the project engineer at Benmore, Mr J. W. Ridley. Scheduled for completion in early 1968, the scheme would employ about 100 men for the next two years, he said. They would work on investigation, site stripping and rock excavation. Generally the settlement at Otematata would serve Aviemore. About 100 more houses would be built at Otematata soon for Benmore staff and men engaged on preliminary work at Aviemore.
Investigations for Upper Waitaki hydro schemes are being intensified and more men are concentrating in the upper reaches. These schemes would probably require excavations for extensive open races, two earth dams and three power stations at Maryburn. Lake Pukaki, and on the Ohau river at the head of Lake Benmore, said Mr Ridley.
