BELGIAN POLL
Coalition Resigns BRUSSELS. March 27. The Belgian Prime Minister, Mr Gaston Eyskens. today handed the resignation of his Catholic-Liberal Government to King Baudouin. Mr Eyskens suffered a sharp rebuff from voters yesterday in the first election in Belgium since the Congo withdrawal and consequent austerity.
The main opponents in the election, the Catholics and the Socialists, may end by joining forces to rule the country.
If this happens the 62-year-old former N.A.T.O. Secre-tary-General. Mr Paul-Henri Spaak, is expected to be back in power either as VicePremier and Foreign Minister —or even as Prime Minister. The Socialists maintained their strength as the second biggest party. The distribution of the 212 seats in the Chamber is: Catholics. 96 (loss of eight). Socialists, 84 (unchanged). Liberals, 20 (loss of one). Communists, five (gain of four). Flemish Party, five (gain of four). Independents, two (gain of two).
