DEATH OF MR E. C. POWELL
Local Bodies’ Tributes
A tribute to the ability of Mr E. C. Powell as a reporter of meetings of the Christchurch Transport Board; and other local body meetings, was paid by the board’s chairman (Mr J. Palmer) at its meeting yesterday. Mr Powell lost his life in a yachting accident at the week-end.
Mr Powell, of the reporting staff of '"Tie Press” had been well known to. all board members who had local body connexions, said Mr Palmer. Mr Palmer said that he had always been impressed by Mr Powell’s ability as a reporter, and by the fact that he was a very fair reporter. “This board and other local bodies have suffered a real loss in the death of such an able reporter of their meetings as Mr Powell," said Mr Palmer. He moved that the board send a letter of sympathy to Mr Powell’s widow and family. The resolution was seconded by Mr N. R. Forbes, who also paid, a tribute to Mr Powell, and carried. Board members then stood in silence as a mark of respect.
The Christchurch-Lyttelton Road Tunnel Authority yesterday expressed sympathy with the relatives of Mr Powell, and “paid tribute to the excellent services given by Mr Powell to local bodies and the public in his career as a journalist over many years.”
The secretary of the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Mr J. G. Laurenson) wrote: "It was with regret that we at the board’s office learned today of the death of Mr Powell in such tragic circumstances. Mr Powell, who regularly reported the proceedings of my board’s meetings, was well known to members and staff alike, and I should be grateful if you would pass on to his family the board’s sympathy.”
