Effort In Vain Wisden's chroniclers would have found something to interest them at Linebin College yesterday when the teaching staffs of the University of Canterbury and Canterbury Agricultural College played their annual cricket match for the Parton Ashes.
The teams played to a local rule of no dismissals before scoring. H. Chaplin (Lincoln) was dismissed three times off successive balls from R. Golledge (University), but since he bad not scored he was not out. Golledge had Chaplin caught behind the wickets, and then bowled him with each of the next two balls. The pity of it was that, after all that. Golledge had to be recorded in the score-book as having taken no wickets during the match. Robber Dispute No decision was reached when a rubber industry disputes committee met on Friday to discuss a recent dispute at the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company’s works at Papanui. The dispute, over the cessation of overtime payments to four workers tor making out time and job sheets, caused a stoppage, after which work was resumed when the management restored the payments pending consideration by the disputes committee. The parties are to discuss the matter among themselves and then if needed the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr S. W. Armstrong) will give a decision. Fijian Police Fijian policemen, except on ceremonial occasions, will no longer carry out their duties in the distinctive traditional uniform of blue tunic, red cummerbund, white serrated sulu and sandals. Instead they are to wear khaki shorts, silver-grey shirts, long blue socks, garters and boots. The reason for the change is that sulus are too impractical for everyday duty. The policemen's baton and handcuffs cannot be carried with ease, while the sulu is an awkward dress when dealing with a violent person.
