Sharpeville slept in the sun today, the first anniversary of the shooting which rocked South Africa and the world. The road in the front of the police station—where a year ago 69 persons were killed and 180 wounded—was empty. Elsewhere in South Africa the anniversary passed with only scattered demonstrations, and a flutter of protest leaflets. In spite of an official ban on all meetings commemorating the Sharpeville and Langa shootings, several hundred Africans and a few whites gathered in the centre ofCa pe Town in silent protest.
Four whites and 12 nonwhites were arrested. In the Johannesburg area. “Mourn Sharpeville” leaflets were passed around. At the Langa and Nyanga African townships—where three were killed and 25 wounded a year ago—a spotter plane flew overhead, watching a peaceful scene.
