“U.N. GET OUT”

Kasavubu’s Call LEOPOLDVILLE, March 20. President Kasavubu today called the United Nations military operations in the Congo a failure, and said it was time for the United Nations force to get out. “Since the United Nations came conditions have grown worse,” President Kasavubu said. “It was called to bring peace; it in fact brought disorder. ‘We must ask the United Nations and its army to get out and let us solve our problems in our own way. We must say to them: ‘You have been our guests, now it is time for you to leave.’ ” President Kasavubu spoke for 50 minutes with a group of six American newspaper editors and publishers in his office overlooking the Congo river. The soft-spoken President insisted that the United Nations civilian operations were helpful and he hoped the world body would continue to provide civilian technicians, economic aid, and food supplies. “These civilian operations have been hampered by military elements attempting to meddle in our affairs.” he said.
