FANATICAL TRIBESMEN
Armed Bands In Congo
(N.ZP.A.~ Reuter—Copyright) LEOPOLDVILLE, Mar. 19.
Hundreds of fanatical tribesmen with bows and arrows and leopard-skin head bands are threatening a new wave of terror against Europeans in Kivu Province, the United Nations reported today.
Calling themselves members of a religious sect, the tribesmen are roaming the countryside declaring thev will kill all Europeans. So far the United Nations has received no reports of actual violence.
The tribesmen, known as ‘‘Kartelites,” are concentrated around the Kasonso area, about 100 miles south of Kindu, and the Congolese Army and the United Nations Malayan force in Kindu are organising a strong patrol to put them down.
Thirty missionaries are still in the area and the United Nations spokesman said there might be other white people in the district. Even the Congolese population was uneasy about the tribesmen.
The spokesman also announced that Baluba tribesmen in Nyunzu, north Katanga, had beaten un the crews of three United Nations helicopters which were forced to land there.
Japan was reported to be the world’s most literate country—with a record of 99 per cent.
