New Coaster For New Zealand

The motor-vessel Storm—■the latest acquisition of the (Canterbury Steam Shipping ■Company—will load at the (Welsh port of Newport tomorrow for her maiden (voyage to New Zealand to 'engage in coastal trading. ' Built by the Clydeside firm (of Scott and Sons, the new Storm is 214 ft long and has I a 33ft 6in beam. Third of the company's vessels to be named Storm, she was handed over on Saturday. Bringing the Storm back to

New Zealand is the company’s senior master, Captain A. O. Horler. and its engineering superintendent, Mr P. A. Thomas. Top speed reached by the Storm during trials was 13 knots, although the company’s contract specified only 11.75 knots. The Storm is the first of the company’s ships to have radar and she is also equipped with an echo sounder and radio-telephone. Her voyage from Wales,

through the Pantuna Canal, will take about 48 days and she is expected to arrive about the middle of May. On the trip she will carry a cargo of steel sheets and bars for Wellington. After unloading there the Storm will come to Lyttelton. She will join the other ships of the company, the Breeze, Gale and Calm, all built by Scott and Sons, and the Squall on the New Zealand coastal trade.

Registered at Lyttelton, the Storm will carry general cargoes between there, Bluff. Dunedin, Timaru, Wellington, New Plymouth and Wanganui.

A crew of 15. including the master, mans the Storm. There is accommodation in single-berth cabins for the captain, three engineers, two mates, the cook and the steward.

The rest of the crew will share double-berth cabins.
