CONSUMER SERVICE

Organisation Praised

Manufacturers and retailers should welcome the Consumer Service and cooperate with it to the full, said Mr A. R. Low, assistant Governor of the Reserve Bank, in an address to the convention of the Independent Grocers’ Alliance.

The consumer was a forgotten man. He was the most important person in the community—in an economic sense—and yet he had in some ways been neglected. No-one could get very far in business by producing and trying to sell goods that the consumer did not want, said Mr Low.

The consumer was the person for whom the whole business of production, distribution and exchange was carried out, and if his wants were not satisfied then the whole economic process was defective, said Mr Low. “He ought to be king, yet too often he is the last to be considered.” One of the features of modern economies was that persons with common interests banded together for mutual protection. “There are associations for the promotion of this and that, societies for the protection of some particular interest: but until recently the consumer has had no organised protection.

“The Consumer Service has already done a good job and is expanding its activities. Both manufacturers and retailers should welcome this new organisation,” said Mr Low.
