CRICKET ST. BEDE’S ON TERMS WITH SIL VERSTREAM

The annual game between St. Bede's and St. Patrick’s. Silverstream, was evenly poised at the end of the first day’s play yesterday. St Bede's scored 104 in its first innings, and St. Patrick’s, in reply, compiled 135. St. Bede’s batted again, and at stumps had lost one wicket for 21.

Winning the toss. St. Bede’s decided to bat on an easypaced wicket. The opening partnership between McNamara and Mcßride was encouraging for the home team until the first wicket fell at 44. Both openers batted with assurance which the next batsmen lacked. The scoring rate w#s very brisk for the first hour, when 70 runs were made. At lunch St. Bede’s was 94 for five, but in the afternoon, after a disastrous collapse, the side was all out for 104. For St. Patrick’s, Barnao and Lander were the destroying agents. Lander, in particular, bowled exceptionally well to take five for 39.

In its first innings St. Patrick’s began on a very black note, losing Courtenay off the first ball of Dobson’s first over. With four for 41 It seemed likely St. Patrick’s would not reach the score set by the opposition. This was further emphasised when the seventh wicket fell at 91. A valuable eighth-wicket partnership of 33 by McCann and Lander helped to rectify the situation. Both hit the ball hard and confidently. Somers, a right-hand mediumfast bowler, attacked the stumps and allowed the batsmen few opportunities to score. In its second innings St. Bede’s los>t McNamara for one, but at stumps Amos and McBride were batting confidently. Scores: — ST. BEDE’S
