POPPY SALE PROCEEDS
Concern At Decrease
“I think a committee should be set up to find out why Christchurch’s collection for poppies last year was down by £4OO on 1958,” said Mr S. A. Coleman at a meeting of the executive of the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association last evening.
For the last three years the amounts taken for poppies have decreased. In 1958, £4523 was taken, in 1959, £4216, and in 1960, £4150. Takings in Auckland and Dunedin increased.
"Last year the day was very wet and that does affect takings,” said Mr Coleman.
"Of the £4150 we took last year, about £4105 has been spent in relief,” said the president (Mr A. Farrar).
Mr G. D. Hattaway said he believed one of the main reasons for the decrease was that many persons did their shopping in suburban areas. That was where helpers should have been concentrated. A committee was set up to investigate the problem.
