HURRICANE IN TONGA
Big Damage To Town SUVA, March 20. Reports reaching Suva from Vavau, Tonga, today say that hurri ane damage at the week-end was estimated at £200,000 and two persons were killed. Damage at Haapai is estimated at £30,000 but there was no loss of life. A flying-boat of the Royal New Zealand Air Force left Lauthala Bay, Fiji, today to make a photographic reconnaissance. The aircraft reported this afternoon that 50 per cent, of buildings at Vavau were completely wrecked and another 5 per cent, had no roofs. Houses in the main settlement seemed to have suffered least and the wharf was apparently undamaged. One quarter of the coconut palms had been uprooted. Another flying-boat will take off at daylight tomorrow for Nukualofa to pick up Tongan Government officials and take them on a survey of affected areas.
