LABOUR FOR FARMS
Plan to Counter Shortage (N.Z. Press Association) - HAMILTON, March 20. Provided sufficient support is forthcoming from farmers, Waikato Federated Farmers may begin a scheme to fly farm workers out to the Dominion from the United Kingdom to counter the serious shortage of farm workers in New Zealand. Farmers have Ireen asked to let the Hamilton headquar-
ters know their definite labour requirements to see whether it • would be worth while to send a representative to England to screen farm workers wishing to come to New Zealand. The federation already has a suitable person in mind to "carry out the task.
Farmers would have to sponsor the immigrants and would have to advance about £165. of which £lOO would be returnable by the Government and £65 by the immigrant. Farm worker immigrants would be under contract to spend two years doing farm work, not necessarily on the same farm.
The serious farm ' labour position in Waikato is indicated by the fact that more than 25 State houses in country areas, normally occupied by workers employed by farm labour schemes, are empty.
