Carrier’s Low Charges Disturb Competitors

The No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr J. S. Haywood) offered his sympathy to objectors to a licensing application on Friday. The objectors said they could not economically carry sand and shingle at the prices charged by the applicant, Johannes Theodorus Le Brun, of 72 Beresford street New Brighton. The objectors said they had lost business since Le Brun started selling shingle and sand. Le Brun (Mr A. Hearn) was granted the transfer of a continuous goods service licence from Alexander Findlay Cruickshank, Christchurch. He said he was a wood and coal merchant in New Brighton. He sold sand and shingle at £1 a yard for three yards, using a licensed carrier to deliver the orders. The application was opposed bv K. A. Price <Mr J. A. Bretherton), the Christchurch branch of *he New Zealand Road Transport Alliance, A. H. Rogers, and J. Buxton (Mr I. A. i Pringle). Price said that he and most other operators charged according to a scale fixed by the Christchurch Shingle and Metal Supply Association. He charged £1 7s for a cubic yard of shingle, and he could not sell it at Le Brun’s price. Mr Haywood said he had no authority to fix charges. If Le Brun thought he was big enough and strong enough to sell shingle at £1 a yard there was nothing he could do about it. However, he advised Le Brun to 'examine his charges if he planned to make the busi- | ness pay. Other Applications Mr Haywood heard 10 other : apnlications. Mutual Rental Cars Ltd., T!maru (Mr A.
