Children's Court Hearings Last Month

A boy and a girl, both aged 16. were sentenced to a period of Borstal training when they appeared before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.. and his associate, Mr W. C. Colee, in the Children’s Court in February. The boy, who had previous convictions for shoplifting, theft, power-cycle conversion and false pretences, was sentenced on charges of mischief. damage to a car window, theft of a cheque book and false pretences, shopbreaking and theft, and warehouse breaking with intent to commit theft. The girl was sentenced on a charge of housebreaking and theft. Sixty-four juveniles—ss boys and nine girls—appeared before the Court during the month. A 16-year-old boy was placed under probation for two years on a charge of theft. Eight children were committed to the care of the Superintendent of Child Welfare. They were: two boys, aged 11 and 15 years, and a girl, aged 16. who were deemed to be “not under proper control”; a 13-year-old boy for being indigent and "not under proper control”; a 14-year-old v. ho faced five charges of theft and breaking and entering; a 13-year-old boy on 12 charges of unlawful taking of power-cycles, and one charge of theft: a 15-year-old boy for theft and aiding and abetting traffic offences; and a 16-year-old girl who appeared on complaints that she was “delinquent” and “not under proper control.” Six boys and three girls were placed under supervision for two years. casions. and an offence of theft, a 15-year-old girl was placed under supervision for 18 months and ordered to make restitution of £6 15s. Sixteen boys and two girls, aged between 14 and 16 years, were placed under supervision for one year. They were three boys for unlawfully taking power-cycles; four boys for theft, one of them who was ordered to make restitution of £23 10s 9d; a boy who was also ordered to pay £8 restitution, on a charge of wilful damage; a boy who was ordered to live and work where directed by his supervising officer. on a charge of attempted theft; a bdy for using obscene language over the telephone; a boy for receiving a bow and arrow; two boys who had their licence cancelled. one being also fined £5. when they were charged with unlawful taking of a motor-car; a boy for unlawfully taking a motor-car; a boy for breaking, entering and theft: a boy who w’as admonished and discharged on a charge of assault, fined £8 on a charge of obscene language. and fined £2 for having no warrant of fitness. A charge of driving without due care and attention was withdrawn. Two girls w'ere ordered to reside and work where directed when they appeared on a charge of not being under proper control. One of the girls also faced a charge of theft.

For using obscene language m Cathedral square a 16-year-old boy was placed under supervision for six months. Two boys aged 12 and 15 years, and a 16-year-old girl. W’ere admonished and discharged. The boys appeared on theft charges and the girl on a charge of drunkenness. A 13-year-old boy w’as admonished and returned to the care of the Superintendent of Child Welfare for unlawfully taking a motor-car.

Eleven boys aged between 14 and 16 years, were fined. Three boys, on charges of theft, were fined £lO each and two of them were each ordered to pay £2 Is 8d restitution. A boy had his licence cancelled for a year and was fined £7. when he appeared on a charge of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs; two boys wree each fined £lO for disorderly behaviour in a public place. A boy was fined £l5 and ordered to make restitution of £8 18s 6d. on a charge of unlawfully taking a power-cycle. A boy was fined £5 for discharging a missile. A youth charged with attempted theft was fined £lO. A charge of assault on a female was dismissed. A boy was fined £1 for selling a firearm without a permit and another boy was fined £1 for delivering a firearm without a permit. Nine boys and one girl, all 16 years of age. were charged with the following traffic offences: For using a motorvehicle without due care and attention, and also for having no driver’s licence, a girl was admonished and discharged. Three boys were fined for having no warrant of fitness. Two were fined £1 each and the third. £2. For failing to give way and for having no warrant of fitness, a boy was fined £4 with witness expenses £2 2s. A youth was fined £3 for exceeding 30 m.p.h. For having no driver’s licence a boy was admonished and discharged. Fines of £3 and £2 were imposed on a youth for having no “L” plates and carrying a pillion passenger. For failing to give way a fine of £3 was imposed on a youth. Admitting having driven without due care and attention, a youth w’as fined £4.
