HURRICANES DYING
Storm Misses Nukualofa
(N.Z Press Association) AUCKLAND. March 19.
Two hurricanes which have been threatening islands in the Pacific have passed their peak and are dying well out to sea.
On Saturday a supply drop on Raoul Island, was postponed because of a hurricane in the Tonga area. A Hastings was to have left Whenuapai on Saturday morning but it was cancelled when it was learned that winds in the Raoul area were gusting up to 60 m.p.h.
The supply drop is expected to be made some time this week when winds in the area have diminished. The Auckland weather office reported today that the hurricane missed Nukualofa and was now more than 700 miles south-east of the island. It was moving out of the tropics and reaching the last stage of its life. Another hurricane near the Society group has moved more to the south and is also ■dying in strength. A third tropical storm, not classified as a hurricane is centred just north of the northern tip of New Caledonia.
