The New Bible

Sir. —A facsimile page of the new translation of the New Testament recently published in the London “Observer” discloses the following alterations from the present (Authorised) version. The First Epistle of St. John becomes the First Letter of John. Instead of “and these things write we unto you. that your joy may be full.” we have “and we write this in order that the joy of all of us may be complete.” “If we say that we have no sin. we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” becomes “if we claim to be sinless, we are self-deceived, and strangers to the truth. If we confess our sins he is just and may be trusted to cleanse us from every kind of wrong.” What, in effect, is gained by such alterations? —Yours, etc.. PARTURIUNT MONTES. March 16. 1961.
