Traffic Control
Sir.—Maj’ I ask the traffic committee of the City Coun-| cil some questions about cyclists? 1 When are traffic officers going to prosecute cyclists riding more than two abreast? 2. Are two cyclists riding abreast permitted to overtake and pass two cyclists riding abreast, making four cyclists spread out in a weaving, wobbling mass in front of overtaking motor traffic? Ferry road any week morning between 8 and 9 a.m. will give examples of this. 3. Are cyclists permitted to ride to the front of a line of cars at traffic lights? 4. What action do inspectors intend to take against the wobbling cvclist who requires at least 6ft of road to contain him? 5. Do traffic officers find it difficult to prosecute cyclists because of lack of registration numbers, etc.? 6. Are cyclists politically untouchable in Christchurch because of their large numbers? 7 Are cyclists permitted to bar others and if not why are they not being prosecuted?— Yours, etc., EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL. March 13. 1961. [“Prosecutions have been taken for cycling more than two abreast, which is a definite breach of the Traffic Regulations.*’ said Cr. M. McLean. chairman of the traffic committee of the Christchurch City Council, yesterday. “It is also unlawful for two cyclists to remain abreast while overtaking and passing another vehicle. When approaching traffic lights cyclists should retain their positions in order of arrival, keeping to the left of their appropriate lane of travel in to allow' faster-moving traffic to overtake. Action has been taken against cyclists who have deliberately ’wobbled* by charging them with negligent riding Cycle registration in all probability w’ould be of assistance. It is quite legal to carry another person on the bar of a cycle.”]
