MR LAKE OPENS FACTORY

Large Building In Opawa Road

The new, large factory of New Zealand Wallboards. Ltd., in Opawa road, was officially opened yesterday by the Minister of Finance (Mr Lake). More than 100 persons attended. Other official visitors at the opening were Mr J. Mathison, member of Parliament for Avon, who represented the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nash), and Mr N. E. Kirk, member of Parliament for Lyttelton, the district in which the factory is built. The chairman of directors of the company (Mr G. F. Baskett) welcomed the 'official visitors and spoke on the history of the company in New Zealand. “New factories of this nature provide a foundation for the economic growth to meet the needs of a growing population,” said Mr Lake. “Wherever one looks growth is taking place throughout the country.” Earlier Mr Lake had said, “Hear, hear,” when Mr Baskett said that the establishment of the new factorv showed the company’s faith in the South Island and in Christchurch. “When we get the tunnel road I believe a lot more industry will establish itself in this part of the South Island,” said Mr Lake. Mr Baskett presented Mr Lake with a clock on behalf of the directors of the company.
