TROTTING CHEVIOT CLUB AT NEW BRIGHTON

Dark Louise Picked To Win Sprint Dark Louise is generally expected to switch from staying to sprinting successfully in the Hurunui Handicap at the Cheviot Trotting Club’s summer meeting which will be held at New Brighton today. Dark Louise had three races earlier in the season and then made a fresh start in the Geraldine Cup at Oran late last month. She ran the two miles out there solidly for second to Falsehood. -Last Saturday she was tried over one mile and three-quarters in the Washdyke Handicap at the Timaru meeting. In that race her driver had little option but to take her into the lead when the pacemaker tired on the home turn. After appearing beaten outside the last furlong, she made a renewed bid on the inner to run the little fancied Toka Boy to three-quarters of a length.

Dark Louise is noted more for her sprinting ability than stamina. If she has retained her latest form she should be handy to the lead from the outset for she is a smart beginner and has drawn the No. 6 barrier position on the limit in a capacity field. Among Dark Louise's rivals are several which which have compiled winning sprint form this season. One of those is Calumite which should offer worthwhile opposition if his run in the Washdyke Handicap last Saturday is to prove of any value. There he was first to wrest the lead from Dark Louise in the run home but tired slightly nearer the end. He should be harder to match over a distance which is shorter by half a mile. Calumite is one of eight runners which will probably

be competing over two miles earlier in the day in the Cheviot Cup. Two of the other seven which are expected to shape better over the sprint distance are Dusky Bay and Terry Gowan. There is winning sprint form close up on the records of both. Dusky Bay gave away starts of up to 24 yards and a beating to a field of milers at Nelson in January but failed to run out 14 furlongs solidly from the same mark at Washdyke last week when having her first race meantime.
