EPIC CLIMB IN BERNESE OBERLAND.—Last week-end, four young climbers completed one of the most difficult and dangerous climbs in mountaineering annals when they succeeded in making the first winter ascent of the notorious north wall of the Eiger, the 13.038ft peak in the Swiss Alps. This face, which has claimed many lives, was first climbed in 1938 by four Germans—Foerg, Heckmeier. Harrer, and Kasparek—and in winter it becomes an even more fearsome task. The north wall is sheer for 3000ft. In the photograph above, a member of the successful 1938 party is shown in a perilous position on the face.
