FIVE M.P.’s EXPELLED
Labour Move In Britain (N.Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, March 16. Five Labour members of Parliament were tonight expelled from the Parliamentary Labour Party because they flouted the official party line. They are Messrs Michael Foot. Sydney Silverman, Emrys Hughes, S. O. Davies and William Baxter. Their offence was to force a vote last night against the Government in debates on money supplied by Parliament to the armed forces. This is contrary to official Labour Party policy, because it is felt that such votes convey a wrong impression to the public. The Labour leaders feel they make people believe the party is opposed to all defence measures, which is not the case. All five belong to the Left wing of the party. Mr Hughes has been a life-long pacifist. Mr Foot has for some time been a bitter critic of the party leader, Mr Hugh Gaitskell. over the party’s nuclear defence policy. Though no longer members of the Parliamentary party, they still remain members of the Labour Party. They will continue to sit in Parliament and are expected to designate themselves as independent Labour members.
