ALGERIA TENSE
New Riots Feared (Rec. 11 p.m.) ALGIERS, March 17, Tension mounted in Algeria today as rumours spread of mass Moslem demonstrations in support of independence for Algeria. Security patrols have been doubled both in Algiers and in Oran. In Algiers, strong contingents of troops, gendarmes and riot police are posted at strategic points. Today and tomorrow are public holidays to mark the end of the fast of Ramadan, and according to a spokesman of the “Algerian provisional Government” in Tunis, certain European extremists are contemplating terrorist acts to coincide with it. Leaflets distributed in Algiers last night by the dissolved French Algeria Front appealed to Moslems to celebrate in peace and to Europeans to stay in their homes, ready to defend themselves. A Government official in Algiers said that an act of provocation by either side “could lead to serious trouble." The French military commander in Algiers, General Adolphe Vezinet, said that “great firmness” would be used against anyone attempting to cause breaches of the peace.
