Attack On Angola By Congo Terrorists
(Rec. 10 p.m.) LISBON, March 17. Terrorist groups crossing the northern border of Angola—from the Congo—have killed and injured families living in isolated plantations in north Angola in the last 24 hours. The Portuguese news agency, Lusitania, reporting this, said that “several” people had died. More details would be given after a police investigation.
Lusitania said the attackers appeared in several places, including the area round Carmona and Ambriz, where arson is reported. Women and children were among the victims of the attacks.
The Lusitania report did not specifically mention the Congo, but the whole of northern Angola borders the Congo. The report said the attacks were made by persons who
crossed the border in groups or as individuals. It described the attacks as “grave” because “they demonstrate the existence of a plan to promote attacks of terrorism, so as to ensure that well-known countries have a pretext to continue to attack Portugal before international public opinion.” A week ago the Portuguese Overseas Ministry reported “inter-tribal” disorder in North Angola caused by agitators who had entered the country in secret.
