Change Urged In Mandate NEW YORK, March 16 The Soviet Union demanded in the United Nations today that South Africa's mandate over Southwest Africa be annulled. The administration of the territory should be handed over to a commission of independent African States. the Soviet Union said The Soviet delegate (Mr S G Lapin), made his demand after the General Assembly overwhelmingly endorsed an appeal to British Commonwealth countries to brine their influence to bear urgently on the Union Government to amend its policies in South-west Africa. The Assembly passed the resolution. submitted by Liberia, the United Arab Republic, and Ceylon, by 74 votes to none, with nine abstentions. Australia. Britain and France abstained New Zealand. Canada. Ceylon. Federation of Malaya Ghana. India. Nigeria. Pakistan and the United States voted for the resolution The resolution declared that the conduct of the Union Government was "a challenge to the authority of the United Nations.” and that the Union Government in its administration of the territory nad “adopted an attitude contrary to the principles and Charter of the United Nations” S.A. Gold Shares Slashed LONDON. March 16 Millions of pounds were slashed from the market value of South African gold shares on the London Stock Exchange today, after the Union’s decision to withdraw her anoliration to remain in the Commonwealth as a republic. . . Losses were also recorded in South African diamond shares. De Beers, for example, dropping 7s 9d to 146 s 3d.
