REDSTONE FIRED

Missile Test Successful

CAPE CANAVEROL (Florida). March 9.

The United States Armv last night successfully fired a Redstone missile on a flight almost identical with the one to be taken by the first United States astronaut About 20 minutes after the 70-foot missile shot into the sky, a dummp warhead plunged into a target area nearly 300 miles south-east of Cape Canaveral The Army described the shot as a “routine check” of recently-produced Redstones However, informed sources said data from the successful tests would be made available to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for its Project Mercury programme. A modified Redstone carrying a one-ton capsule was expected to carry an astronaut to the edge of space within the next two months from Cape Canaveral.
