NATURE’S PALETTE

Turn to nature for the fashion colours of autumn, 1961. You will see them in suburban gardens, on the trees in the parks and along country roads. Strong on fashion’s chart are smokey browns, complemented by all the beige tunings; glowing new shades of golden pheasant and burnt sienna, and charred reds. Dark wine, prune and purple are the darker cousins of amethyst and deep lilac, which have an appeal of their own. These colours are used extensively blended in checks and tweed weaves. Woodfern is the most popular of the green family, but lighter shades, slightly muted, hold their own. The blues to watch for are Royal and a kindly new shade known as porcelain.
