The Economy

Sir,—“No Can Do” may be unduly perturbed about the possibility of another depression. The author of a book. “The Art of Living.’’ says that he took a man to task for being unduly distressed •by the thought of a coming crisis. “Are you mad?” he I said. “Who the devil knows ■ what is to happen, next year?” ; Professor Jevons in an eco- ! nomics paper published only half a century ago claims that ! trade cycles extend over 10 .years. The indications today are that the periods are becoming shorter—that a recession may be here today and gone tomorrow, so to speak. Mistakes are not repeated indefinitely. It is certain, for example, that in no circumstances would children go ; short of milk in New Zeaj land during a period of oversupply.—Yours, etc.. T. E. SHAW. Westport. March 9. 1961.
