NEW 1500c.c. VOLKSWAGEN

CINCE the first rumours of a new model Volkswagen began circulating a few years ago, the world's motoring public has keenly awaited a larger version of one of the most successful cars of all time. Now the secret is out. Shown above is the first picture from Wolfsburg of the brand-new 1500c.c. car which has been added to the Volkswagen range and will be shown for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Like its famous small brother, the new model Volkswagen has an aircooled engine at the rear, and early reports indicate its more pleasant lines and high standard of finish are going to make it an outstanding car of the year.

No price has yet been placed on the car, but it is expected to be very competitively-priced with British cars of a similar capacity. The simple, yet pleasant, lines of the car will immediately attract the attention of those who have failed to be impressed by the looks of the small Volkswagen, and the larger engine will give it a‘much higher top speed.

An announcement by Volkswagen this week says that the bulk of the company’s production will continue to be devoted to tHte small Volkswagen—in fact, their production is to be stepped up to 4000 cars a day.

The new 11-litre car has benefited from the company’s experience with popular mass-production cars. It has plentiful luggage space under the front bonnet, and there is also an external access trunk at the rear. This has been made possible by the space-saving design of the low-mounted air-cooled flatfour engine, which is integral with the gearbox and rear-axle transmission.
