BLENHEIM ROAD SEWER
Installation On Highway
The Christchurch Drainage Board has the approval of the Minister of Works (Mr Goosman) to put the Blenheim road sewer under the highway pavement, the member of Parliament for Riccarton (Mr M. A. Connelly) has been advised. The Minister has told Mr Connelly that on August 12. last year, the board had sought authority to lay the sewer along the recentlycompleted four-lane highway As the section of the highway had only just been reconstructed and sealed at considerable inconvenience to traffic and residents and a considerable portion of the land on one side was free from building, the board had been asked to investigate the possibility of putting the sewer clear of the highway In December, the board had advised that there would be considerable opposition from landowners and residents, and difficulties about the building line restrictions made it inadvisable to pursue the alternative.
Approval had then been given for the board to install the sewer in the road, the Minister said, conditional on reinstatement of the highway pavement and surface to the satisfaction of the Ministry of Works.
While the action would meet the objections of property owners and occupiers there would probably be adverse comment on the excavation of a newlycompleted highway surface he added.
