Mighty Son-Osman Wingatui Double

(Aeu? Zeaiai a Press Association) DUNEDIN, Marell 19. Mighty Son in the Tally Ho Handicap and Osman in the Wingatui Handicap may be the winning off-course double at Wingatui on Saturday, when the Otago Hunt Club will hold its annual meeting. The announcement by the owner-trainer. D. P. Wilson, that Fire Bar will start in his alternative engagement, the sprint, has robbed the Tally Ho Handicap of a readymade favourite, but it has left the issue open and favouritism is likely to be more evenly distributed.

Mighty Son recorded his fourth success for the season at his last start when he beat Subside and Gay Tommy over a mile st Westport. Tao starts earlier he won over the same distance at H'»k;tika. He proved his ability over 9 middle distance earlier in the season when he won over a mile and a Quarter at the Eastern Southland Hunt meeting and again at Omakau in January when he won the Moran Memorial. Ravelston’s last success was in the Grandstand Handicap at the Dunedin spring meeting. His racing in a fresh preparation has been in sprint events. He has not shown up. but he will be better suited by the extra distance in the mile and three furlongs Tally Ho Handicap. Cornflake ran his best race for s om? time at Cromwell on Monday when he finished fourth, and it would take title improvement for him to show up in this field. Aquinas was fourth in the Invercargill Gold Cup. but his subsequent form was well below that effort. Gay Mood may be the best of the others at the foot of the handicap. First Appearance Osman will be making his first appearance from H. A Anderton’s stable. He has freshened up and looks particularly well. His most recent racing has been over a middle distance, and he has been placed in his last five races. His last start was at Gore, when he finished third to Vamoose and Fire Bar. but he recorded several attractive sprint efforts under top-weights before making the grade into open company. With 8-11 he easily accounted for Grate Game *B-1 » in the Winton Hack Handicap, but an even more impressive performance was his second to Melodic m the seven furlong Appren- ■ ces’ Handicap at the New Zealand Cup meeting, when he carried 9-0 from the outside barrier stall in a big field.

The top-weight. Valaris. has not raced since he won at Oamaru in January. Believe Me will make his first appearance for a considerable time. Carbonett appeared to lose her confidence when she fell a: Wyndham on New Year’s Day Sh-' finished sixth ;n the sprint on the last day of ’.he Dunedin meeting and if she is on the return to her best form she cou.d be one of the hardest to beat. Minglow has been racing well below her true ability. Her successes include wins at Trentham and Riccarton. so it would be unwise to discard her in this field. Panel may be the best of the others. She finished fast for fifth place at Cromwell, and her track work today was most impressive. Double fields, with form, are: TALLY-HO HANDICAP. Of £450; one mile and three
