“CLEARING" ON BOARD SHIPS

Di etc Customs Plan May Be Adopted

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY. March 7. Customs and immigration officials are considering a plan for boarding Sydneybound ships in Auckland and “clearing” them on their way to Australia. Under the new plan, customs and immigration officers on the voyage to Australia would check the passports and visas of all foreign visitors, take statutory declarations from all passengers concerning dutiable goods and collect any duty payable. Passengers would then be free to go ashore immediately for baggage inspection on arrival in Sydney. A spokesman for P. and O. Orient Lines said today the company was giving “serious consideration” to the plan. It would make a decision on it in a few days.
