TOWN CLERK’S REPLACEMENT

Birkenhead Move Deplored

(NZ. Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 8.

The Institute of Town Clerks and Municipal Treasurers appealed to the Birkenhead Borough Council tonight to revoke a resolution adopted by the council to replace the Town Clerk (Mr A. G. Strahan). In a letter received by the council the institute said that Mr Strahan was held in high I regard by his fellow members of the institute, and had an unblemished record. The action taken by the council was damaging to his professional reputation, and detrimental to attracting the best possible administrators into local government service.

“We acknowledge the right of a council to hire and fire its officials in the terms and conditions of their employment." it said. "But we deplore the method adopted in this case.”
