ALGERIAN TRUCE
Talks Soon On Peace
<Rec. 9 p.m.i PARIS. March 8. Secret talks between the French Government and the Algerian rebels have resulted tn agreement on a truce on the fighting, official sources said last night. The agreement does not mean a normal cease fire, specifying what is to happen to the rebel troops and their arms, but is simply a gentlemen’s agreement for both sides to cease military operations while preparations for open and official talks are completed. Usually reliable sources said these official talks were due to start towards the end of the month, led on the French side by the Minister for Algeria, Mr Louis Joxe.
The Tunisian Minister of Information (Mr Mohamed Masmoudi), who acted as intermediary for last week’s visit by *be President of Tunisia. Mr Habib Bourguiba. to President de Gaulle, told reporters: “The phase of secret contacts is now outdated and the time for public negotiations has arrived.
