POODLE’S THIRTEEN PUPS IN ONE UTTER
Julie, a pure-bred poodle owned by Mr and Mrs D. Goodland, of Naseby street, recently gave birth to 13 pups. The father is thought to be a labrador.
Julie, a rough-haired white bitch, is known officially as a standard apricot poodle. The pups are all smooth-haired, six are black, and the rest varying shades of grey-brown. Nine are female and six male.
The pups were born in the afternoon in a shrubbery in the garden, and Mrs Goodland had to crawl about four yards into the bushes and bring them out one by one. All the pups
are well, and Julie is quite active.
“I was quite annoyed when I first counted them, but I’m pleased now and very proud of her," said Mrs Goodland. “Julie is a very good mother,” she said.
The pups will be given away. About seven have been promised already. A veterinary surgeon said that it was very unusual for a bitch of Julie’s size to have so many pups in her first litter. The usual number was four, and occasionally seven. He had known, however, of a bitch that had whelped 17 pups.
