MUSICAL ON CHANEL
Lerner, Loewe Production
Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, who wrote, among other shows. “My Fair Lady,” are working on a new musical about the colourful Frenchwoman, Gabrielle Chanel, says a London correspondent. Seventy - two - year - old “Coco” Chanel began dressmaking 38 years ago and became one of the most powerful fashion influences in the world.
She was born of humble parents, worked as a Red Cross nurse, came to Paris and built a small shop into a business employing a staff of 3000 with a yearly turnover of £200.000. In the process she revolutionised women’s fashion. She '‘invented” sweaters, knitted dresses, short skirts, low heels, pleated skirts, the two-piece, short hair and costume jewellery. She went to America at the outbreak of war, returning to Paris 15 years later as full of ideas as ever. Though she is now officially retired, top designers still seek audiences with her to ask for advice. If Lerner and Loewe do go ahead with the musical, they will have no difficulty with the dialogue. Chanel’s sayings are as wise and witty as her dresses.
