PEOPLE IN THE PLAY

Prominent in junior lawn tennis this season, L. Watkins showed very good form in the Town-Country matches at Wilding Park last Saturday. Playing for North Canterbury, he won his singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Last season

Watkins played in the local senior competitions for St. Albans, but this club does not have a team in the senior men’s grade this year.

K. N. G. Orsboum, who played several games for Canterbury as a side-row forward in 1958 and 1959, has announced his retirement. A vigorous breakaway, Orsbourn was unfortunate that when he was playing he had to compete with three All Blacks, D. J. Graham, H. C. Burry, and K. Tremain for a place as a Canterbury loose forward.

J. H. P. Strang, who represented Waikato as a loose forward in the last two seasons, is attending Lincoln College this year. A brother of the Canterbury representative, W. R. Strang, he is highly thought of in the North Island as a promising forward. At present Strang is doubtful if he will be able to play at the beginning of the season because of a knee injury. ★ Excellent form was shown by the Waimairi man, R. Ironside, in the sixman rescue and resuscitation event at the interclub carnival between Waimairi and South Brighton for the Prince of Wales Cup last Sunday. As patient in the event, he managed to touch the buoy only seconds behind A. Lee (South Brighton), a member of the Canterbury representative team. Both swimmers had to swim to the same buoy, which meant that only one of them could touch at the same time without hindering the other.

Making a return to competitive tennis, the former Davis Cup player. J. A. Barry, showed good form for Waikato in its Wilding -Shield challenge against Auckland last week-end Barry, who has played in no major tournaments this season, demonstrated that he has maintained his skill with wins in his two doubles and one of his singles, losing only narrowly in the other to B. E. Woolf.

A very consistent firstgrade table tennis player in Christchurch for many seasons, R. G. Hart, showed excellent form in the final of the summer competition this week. He won his three singles matches without losing without the loss of a game, snd also won his two doubles. Hart was last season ranked eighth in the province, but in this summer competition he has beaten four of those ranked above him.
