ANOTHER NEW LAKE WILL BE FORMED on the Waikato river towards the end of March when the commissioning of the Waipapa hydro-electric scheme will begin. The lake will be six miles long, with a maximum depth of 54ft. This aerial photograph shows the upstream face of the Waipapa dam, with the spillway and diversion structure (left), and the powerhouse (right). The new lake will soon begin to form in the foreground. In the middle background, the downstream coffer dam is being removed by dragline. The earth dam is 480ft long and has an average height of 100ft.
