Headmaster To Retire

Mr N. P. Lory, who for the last 12 years has been headmaster of the Wharenui School and a member of various public organisations, will retire from teaching at the end of next month.

Born at Livingsone in North Otago, Mr Lory received his primary education at the Livingstone and Windsor schools. He worked on his parents’ farm for eight years after leaving school and during this time continued his education by correspondence. His first teaching appointment was in 1916 at Hawea Flat as a relieving teacher for the Otago Education Board. He subsequently taught at five Otago schools—Hinahina. Pukeina, Wedderburn, Wai-

wera south, Awamoko, and for another period at Hawea Flat as headmaster. He was headmaster at Waiwera and Awamoko.

After a period as headmaster of the Washdyke school. Mr Lory moved to Christchurch to take up an appointment as senior assistant at Opawa, m 1936. He was later senior assistant at the Normal school, and headmaster of Lyttelton Main School. Since 1949 he has been headjnaster at Wharenui. He is a member of the Riccarton Rotary Club and is on the board of governors of Te Wai Pounamu Maori Girls’ College. In addition he is a member and past president of the Christchurch Headmasters’ Association. Since his arrival in Christchurch. Mr Lory gained a. bachelor of arts degree as a part-lime student and a diploma of education from the University of Canterbury. Throughout his 45 years as a schoolteacher and headmaster he has taken an active interest in swimming and in teaching pupils to swim. Improvement to school grounds, cricket and athletics have been among his other interests.

A farewell function will be held at the school on March, 28. The Mayor of Riccarton (Mr E. J. Bradshaw), the member of Parliament for Riccarton (Mr M. A. Connelly) the chairman of the Canterbury Education Board (Mr A. Greenwood), former teaching colleagues and school committee members will attend
