POLICE CHIEF RESIGNS
Dispute Over Pay
For Men
( N.ZP.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, Feb. 24. New York’s Police Commissioner (Mr Stephen Kennedy) rejected an offer early yesterday to serve another five years in the 25.000 dollars-a-year post because the city’s Mayor (Mr Robert Wagner) refused to promise an increase of 600 dollars a year in police Pay.
A few minutes later, the Mayor announced he had appointed Michael Murphy, a 47-year-old chief inspector to succeed Mr Kennedy. Mr Kennedy and Mr Wagner have been at odds over the commissioner's demand for higher pay for the city's police force. When offered reappointment to his post Mr Kennedy said he would accept only on condition that the police pay was raised. Mr Kennedy, w-ho has earned wide praise for his integrity and honesty, has also been at loggerheads with members of the force over his ban on “moonlighting"—undertaking outside jobs.
