Bands Attract Crowds
(HZ.P,A..Rru.tor—Copvriaht> NAIROBI, February 19. Four African political meetings in Nairobi’s African quarter were abandoned this afternoon—for the counter attraction of massed pipe and drum bands. African election candidates waited in rain for the crowds to gather but the crowds were at Nairobi’s African Stadium to see the bands of the Coldstream. Guards, Inniskilling Fusiliers and King’s African Rifles “beating the retreat” Polling Begun . Reuter reported that voting in the eight-day election got away to a quiet start. Today was the first of two days of polling in the Nairobi Central constituency—polling stations reopen tomorrow—and 44.7 per cent of the possible electorate cast ballots. The election for a new Legislative Council ends a week tomorrow after which all results will be announced simultaneously.
