FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation. —A ridge of high pressure extends from the Tasman Sea over the North Island and the northern half of the South Island, and a weak trough of low pressure is approaching the south of New Zealand from the south-west. Forecast: Nelson and Marlborough.—Moderate to fresh north-west winds about the Marlborough Sounds, elsewhere light to moderate north to north-easterlies predominating; weather fine, with warm afternoon temperatures. Outlook; little change. West Coast.—Light to moderate north to northeasterly winds at first, with partly cloudy weather; a period of ram is expected to advance from the south during the morning, reaching Buller late in the day, followed by a change to fresh south-west winds and cool, showery weather. Outlook: partly cloudy. Canterbury.—Light to moderate variable winds inland, moderate north-easterlies near the coast; weather mainly partly cloudy and mild, apart from rain in the alps in the afternoon and a change to fresh south-westerly winds in South Canterbury late in the day bringing unsettled, showery weather and cooler temperatures Outlook: partly cloudy.
