Over - confidence may have cost one athlete a Canterbury title when the championships began at Rugby Park on Saturday. After taking third place in the senior javelin, behind R. G. Bali and D. C. Leary, with 188 ft Ilin, the Waimate junior, M. Stewart, turned out to contest the junior javelin championship—the last event on the programme.

On his second throw in the junior contest, Stewart was credited with 193 ft 3Jin. In a hurry to get away from the meeting, Stewart apparently considered this effort sufficient to secure him the title and decided not to contest the event further. In the subsequent throws, the defending champion. J. Sampson (Ashburton) exceeded this with a distance of 194 ft 9in to retain the championship. Although Stewart is the present New Zealand junior champion, winning the title at Rugby Park last year with a throw of 200 ft 81 in, he has not yet won the provincial title.
