ATHLETICS First Day Of Canterbury Championship Meeting

New records were not a feature of the first day of the Canterbury athletic championships at Rugby Park on Saturday, but there were many performances of a high calibre, including three that equalled existing records while a fourth effort, although not the best performance returned in Canterbury by a Canterbury athlete, may qualify as a record.

Conditions for the early events of the meeting -were reasonably favourable, with the track slightly holding. Later in the meeting, howover, a chilling sou’-west wind had an adverse effect on the round-the-track and some field events.

Possibly the most noteworthy achievements were those of Miss Lesley Anderson, the New Zealand pentathlon title-holder, with recordequalling performances of sit sin in the high jump and 11.7 sec in the 80 metre hurdles. The "other record equalled was in the senior 220 yards hurdles, in which P. Cates returned 25sec. The throw of 194 ft 9in by J. Sampson in the junior javelin may become a new Canterbury record, although the Waimate athlete, M. Stew- ■ art, won the New Zealand i title at Rugby Park with a * distance of 200 ft B*2in last ’ season. The official programme listed the provincial •• record as 187 ft 3in, set by the present senior New Zealand champion, R. G. Ball, in 1954. It seems that for some reason no application was lodged for the recognition of Stewart’s national ittle-winning distance, but this could not be verified by officials without a ‘ detailed check of the official ■ hies. Wind assistance during the 180 metre hurdles race will i preclude Miss Anderson from , having" her time of 11.7 sec . bracketed with that of the ‘ 1950 Empire Games representative, Miss J,. Shackleton, I as a Canterbury record. Miss ’ Anderson overcame adverse conditions in the high jump, i however, to equal her own Canterbury record of sft sin—- ; a height she cleared at the ■ first attempt after having two misses at sft 2in and one at i sft 4in. In taking second place in the 80 metre hurdles, i Miss A. MacDonald was an--1 other to achieve a personal i best time.

Eighth Title | For the national javelin i throw champion, R. G. Ball, the day was a most successful one. In addition to re-

j taming the javelin throw title • with 206 ft in he won his I eighth successive title in the shot put with a distance of 44ft 5*2 in—just over three feet short of his provincial • record. Ball has now won the senior shot put title seven ! times, and the junior once. A feature of the javelin throw was that for the first ; time not Only did the win-' ner exceed 200 ft in a championship performance, but the ; second place man, D. C. Leary. ' also accomplished this with his , best throw of 220 ft Ilin.

Competing in his first Canterbury track titles for some seasons, after having returned from the North Island early last year, J. K. Macdonald won the first title of the meeting —the six miles—with an excellent time of 29min 40.4 sec, only 3.6 sec outside the record he set earlier in the season.

The long striding Macdonald ensured his win by leading for almost all of the 24 ; laps and he gradually dropped the rest of the field until only ,R. Stevens, the defending ' champion, was with him. Macj donald drew away over the ’ last mile and a half for a ’ comfortable win. In taking ‘ second place lOsec back, I Stevens improved on his pre- ; vious best time by about I 24sec.

Promoted Juniors Winners of junioi' national championships last year. J. Power and A. Steel, made their debut in senior titles with wins by sub- ; stantial margins. Although his stride was rather cramped in the

final sprint. Power had too much speed for his only challenger in the last lap. B. Turner, and he pulled away to win by 3.ssec in 4min 16.3 sec.

Seriously short of training as the result of an injury to a leg artery, J. D. Macdonald was determined to make a race of the event and set the pace almost from the start. He was unable to sustain his effort and drifted back for third place in 4min 26.5 sec. Power took the lead from Turner starting the fourth lap. but it was not until going down the back for the last time he was able to gain a significant lead. The national junior 220 yards champion. Steel, won the 100 yards in lOsec by the comfortable margin of almost three •yards from D. Mackenzie, second, and B. Savage, third, both with times of 10.3 sec. The announcement of the placings Caused a ; minor stir.

i Back in the field with 30 yards ’to go, R. James, winner of the I junior title last year, came through on the inside with a strong finishing burst and manyconsidered him a comfortable place-getter. A protest was lodged ‘ by the Greymouth club on be- : half of James, but without a photo-finish there was virtually no alternative but for the officail placings to be upheld. Junior Mile After leading almost through-

out the junior mile. G. Pyne, who recently transferred from Wellington, 'withstood a determined bid by B. Malloy in the last lap, drawing away' in the finishing straight to win by a matter of yards in 4min 22.95ec. Timed at 4min 23.65ec, Malloy improved on his best, time of 4min 25sec recorded only the previous week at the international meeting at Lancaster Park. During this season Malloy was improved his time by more than seven seconds.

One of the outstanding runs of the meeting was that of M. Jones in the under 17 mile with a time of 4min 29.75ec. Jones gave the rest of the field little chance by reeling off the first half-mile in 2min Bsec. Although he slumped during the next two laps, a win for him was never in doubt and ne held a lOsec margin from W. Harbison at the tape.

Miss Chamberlain’s Successes The former world 440 yards record holder. Miss Marise Chamberlain. made a good beginning to winning five titles for the fifth successive year with comfortable wins in the 75 yards in B.7sec, the 220 yards in 25.45ec. and the 880 yards in 2min 13.2 sec. In the circumstances Miss Chamberlain's effort in the half-mile was most praiseworthy, for she was only o.4sec outside her Canterbury and New Zealand record, after making all her own running and contending with the strong head wind in the back straight.

In the senior 440 yards, the defending champion, G. F. Hack, was much too strong for his opponents, with the official time of 49.55ec giving him a margin of o.Bsec over B. Howman.
