Fifth Heat—

Arania received a mixed reception, particularly from the members’ enclosure, when she beat the firm favourite, Diamond Hanover, in the Fifth Championship Qualifying Heat. She received the run of the race and ran out the last furlong too solidly for her rivals.

Kiwi Dillon, Waitaki Child and Guiseppe broke at the start. Young Dieman tangled at about the end of a furlong, Auditor, which was pulled up, Maestro’s Melody, Reason Why, Three Aces and Kiwi Dillon meeting interference.

Diamond Hanover began best, Arania working into the trailing position immediately after the start. Maestro’s Melody was almost three lengths behind them at the end of two furlongs, with Lady Belmer clear of Guiseppe, followed by Reason Why, Kiwi Dillon and Three Aces.

The field closed up with six furlongs left, but racing to the straight Diamond Hanover led Arania by a length and a half, with two lengths to Lady Belmer, which was followed by Maestro’s Melody. Guiseppe. Three Aces, Young Dieman and Reason Why. Arania pulled out to challenge near the furlong. She

quickly mastered Diamond Hanover and did not have to be asked for a serious effort to win by a length. Diamond Hanover set a solid pace, but he did not run on quite as well as expected. However, he was unchallenged for second, being four lengths in front of Guiseppe. which made up several lengths in the straight. There was merit in his effort as he was checked early. Maestro’s Melody, after meeting trouble early, battled on over the final furlong to take fourth place a neck back, two lengths in front of a solid finisher in Three Aces. Ladv Belmer was tiring a length back, with four lengths to Young Dieman, which beat Waitaki Child by half a length. Then there were two lengths to Reason Why and four lengths to Kiwi Dillon, which attempted to move uo wide inside the last half-mile only to stop badly when his condition gave out.
