A.A. SIGNPOSTING PRAISED
New Zealand's standard system of signposting was described as being a very great advantage to motorists, by the chairman of the Automobile Association of Gheat Britain (Viscount Brentford) in Christchurch last evening. Lord Brentford explained that although very much the same kind of services were offered motorists by the associations of Great Britain and New Zealand, the signposting service was about the only one that was not provided in Britain.
After three weeks of travelling about the North ’lsland. Lord Brentford said that the Dominion had some very good roads, but added that there was still a lot to be done—“particularly those shingle roads in the back country, you know.” “But when one bears in mind the small population you have and considering the country’s economy, then I would say that you have made remarkable progress with your reading system,” he said. Last evening Lord Brentford went to Templeton to see Mr and Mrs T. Sanderson, the
parents of the seednd New Zealander to hold the Girdlers Guild Scholarship. The scheme, whereby a scholarship for study at Oxford was provided by the guild to a selected student, was “working exceedingly well,” he said. This morning, acompamed by his wife, Lord Brentford will travel to Hanmer Springs. They will be escorted through the Canterbury portion of their Dominion tour by the president of the Automobile Association (Canterbury) (Mr E. R. Casbolt) and the association’s general secretary (Mr E. S. Palliser).
