Raft Race For Scouts

A “Kon Tiki” expedition, organised by the Rapanui district boy scouts, was held on the Estuary on. Saturday morning. The rafts, which were manned by scouts from all over the Canterbury district, were of varied types of construction. The contest, which was divided into two sections—under and over. 15—was judged on speed, —‘ tear

cooking, navigation and team spirit. Senior boys were allowed a crew of four and they had to cook their fooci during the race. Those in the under 15 sec-, tion had a crew of two with two others on shore doing the cooking. AH the rafts were designed by the scouts and they were not allowed to use any nails in constructing them. Most of them were held together with rope and pegs. They were built mainly of kerosene tins, oil drums and tarpaulins. Results were:—Under 15: Heathcote 1. Darfield and St. Martins (equal) 2. Over 15: Riccarton 1. Darfield 2. Shirley 3, St. Martins 4.
