MINISTERIAL VISITS
Mr McAlpine Replies
The Minister of Civil Aviation (Mr McAlpine) has taken strong exception to the personal criticism made by the Labour member for Napier (Mr J. G. Edwards). Mr Edwards alleged that Ministers of the Crown had not extended the “ordinary courtesies" to him when visiting his electorate.
‘‘Mr Edwards's phrenetic outburst was no surprise to me. One has come to expect such things from him.” said Mr McAlpine on Saturday. “He suggests that he has not been given notice of my Intention to visit Hawke’s Bay area to inspect possible alternative sites for an aerodrome.
“I shall be arriving in Napier on Thursday, February 23, and leaving next day, after having listened to representations from interested persons or organisations.
“On Friday, when arrangements were completed, just 13 days before my intended visit. I sent five identical telegrams to interested parties. Including one to each of the members for Hawke's Bay, Hastings, and Mr Edwards himself, member for Napier, informing them of my intended visit.
“As for his complaint concerning his own local bodies, complaining that they had not included Mr Edwards in their representations to me, I suggest they know him best, and have evaluated him accordingly.”
