SWIMMING One Canterbury Placing On Last Night Of N.Z. Meeting

'The Press’ Special Service

TAURANGA, Feb 12. A second by G Stringer in the junior boys’ 133 1-3 yards medley was Canterbury's only placing on the final night of the New Zealand swimming championships on Saturday. He and Miss Wendy Dale, who finished fourth in the junior girls’ 100 yards freestyle, were the only Canterbury swimmers to qualify. G. Dann, holder of the senior men’s 220 yards title, swam too slowly in his heat and did not qualify.

Although finishing third behind Auckland and Wellington in the Freyberg Shield competition for total points in senior and junior events, Canterbury failed to win a title in the pool. The province’s only successes were on the diving board, where R L Hodge and Miss Helen Hutton won senior titles, and in the harbour, where C McFadden won the three-mile long distance event

Stringer actually broke the New Zealand record in the junior boys’ medley, but the holder of both title and record. R J Taylor of Auckland. smashed the mark by three seconds in a brilliant win Stringer, however. 2 ssec slower, can take much credit for forcing Taylor to break the record to win. just as he had done in the 100 yards freestyle where Taylor beat him by inches

Canterbury’s other swimmer in this event, A McDonald, was eighth fastest in the heats and did not qualify.

Miss Wendy Dale finished only fourth in her heat, and since there were four heats in the event her chances for the final did not seem too rosy until it was realised that the other heats had been much slower, and the three who beat Miss Dale in the morning were the only three to do so at night. Miss Dale swam the sane time, Imin ssec, in both heat and final. Only 2sec outside the record, this was I.7sec behind the winning time of the Greymouth girl. Miss Joan Ray Dann Disappointing

Dann was most disappointing in the heats of the men’s 220 yards freestyle Last year at Blenheim, when he defended his 100 yards title. Dann failed to qualify by choosing a leisurely pace in his heat and this year, defending the 220 yards, made the same mistake again. G. Le Cren, whose dislocated thumb will keep him out of swimming for about three weeks, did not appear Stringer, who had been placed second in the 100 yards junior freestyle and third in the 20 yards, failed to qualify for the 440 yards. Canterbury’s two swimmers in the 20 yards breaststroke, M. J M Hay and G Johnson, did not qualify. Hay could have qualified by reproducing his earlier junior time of 3min Isec, but swam only 3min 7.lsec. Johnson, 3min 1 ssec, was faster .han the titleholder. C Hilt, but this was the seventh fastest and did not qualify. Miss C. MacDonald, the Canterbury butterfly champion, had the misfortune in the junior 100 yards to have two out of four entrants in her heat scratch, and although she won comfortably, was not pushed hard enough by her one remaining opponent to qualify. Miss Sally Pitama came second in her heat of the junior girls’ 100 yards backstroke, and Miss C. Hopper third in a heat of the 100 yards girls’ breaststroke, but both their times were too slow.

Canterbury’s final record was:—Senior: Three wins, seven seconds, and a third Junior: Two seconds and six thirds. Abbreviations used tn the results are: (C.) Canterbury, (A.) Auckland. (W.)
