OUTBREAK OF PLAGUE

“Black Death*’ In Venezuela CARACAS. February 12. Bubonic plague, the dreaded “black death" of the Middle Ages, has broken out 42 miles west of here and killed all but one of the 24 persons living in a small unnamed village, health authorities said today About 600 square miles has been placed under the control of sanitary brigades working to stamp out the disease before it spreads any further, officials said Alirio Delgado, the only survivor of the epidemic in the village, said the populace went to desperate lengths, even burning down houses, in an effort to check the plague. The area surrounding the village, a few miles from the town of Tejelias. has been declared a danger zone and a bounty of eight cents (about 8d) is being offered for every rat killed. Rats are a key factor in the spread of the disease The Venezuelan National Guard, working with public health units, has set up highway checkpoints and all travellers on roads leading in and out of the area are being examined

Tight controls on the movement of all foodstuffs from the stricken region have also been imposed.
